How to Create a Blog from Scratch - Step Three

March 9, 2008 – 3:07 am

Information overload is a common problem for new bloggers. Trying to figure out how to do exactly what you want is sometimes an impossible task. With that being said, I have created a small series, called “How to Create a Blog from Scratch” to help organize my thoughts and to help any new blogger who is searching for good information that is all available in one location.

Step Three - Transfer Your Name Servers

If you purchased your domain name and hosting package from GoDaddy, you may not need to do the following steps. I think it may all be done for you, but I am not sure.

I purchase my domain names from GoDaddy and my hosting from HostGator so I will briefly talk about what I had to do for this step.

With GoDaddy it is simply a matter doing the following steps:
1. Log Into Your Account at GoDaddy
2. Click on My Account
3. Click on Manage Domains
4. Click on the Domain Name you are working on
5. Click on Name Servers
6. Copy and Paste the Name Servers that were sent to you from HostGator when you signed up

If you purchased your domain name at NameCheap, perform the following steps:
1. Log Into Your Account with NameCheap
2. Click on Domains in Your Account
3. Click transfer DNS to webhost
4. Copy and paste the name servers that were sent to you from HostGator when you signed up

Once you have successfully performed these steps, you will be ready for Step Four of How to Create a Blog from Scratch.

How to Create a Blog from Scratch - Step Two

March 8, 2008 – 5:31 pm

Welcome to day two of “How to Create a Blog from Scratch“. In these posts you will learn everything you need to know about creating a blog from the ground up. Nothing will be overlooked, and I will describe the procedures in as much detail as possible. I hope that you will find this beneficial and that you will considered subscribing to my feed.

Step Two - Find a Great Hosting Site
By now you should have your own domain name. If not you can get one really cheap at GoDaddy. You can use this coupon code - gdp0309c - to get 10% off any purchase over $40 until March 9. 2008.

The next thing you need to do is find a good hosting company to host your blog. I use HostGator for this blog. If you are a new blogger, you may not know the difference between this hosting site or any another. I can only speak for myself, and my experience, but here is what I know about HostGator.

HostGator has been in business since 2002. Currently, they are the largest cPanel hosting provider in the world. If you do not what a cPanel is, don’t worry, I will be posting about it when I get to installing WordPress on your blog. HostGator hosts over 800,000 domain names from approximately 90,000 customers. They claim that their servers are up and running 99.9% of the time. So far, I have not experienced any downtime at all, but then again, this blog extremely new.

A great benefit for new bloggers is that there are no contracts with HostGator. On every one of their plans, billing is on a month-to-month cycle. This means you are only risking the time and money you spent in the current month. If you get bored, and decide to quit, you can do so at anytime. If you decide to cancel any purchase within 45 days, they will refund you 100% of your money. This speaks volumes about the confidence they have in their hosting.

A final benefit is their 24/7 customer support. I have not owned this blog for very long at all, but I have used their web support 3 times. In fact, my questions had nothing to do with HostGator but I used their experts to teach me how to use the cPanel to get the result I was looking for.

While searching the net today, I found this coupon that will get you $9.94 off your order. This basically gives you your first month free to try it out. The code is “jury”.
